The Grand Massif is a skier’s paradise. Nestled just over the Swiss border a few miles north of the towering Mont Blanc, it attracts visitors of all ages and standards. With just a quick flight from London to Geneva it’s then a winding journey up the mountains to the ski chalets.
There are 148 slopes in all across almost 40,000 hectares of finest French Alps linking five resorts: Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoens and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval – all of which are cleverly criss-crossed by a network of cable cars and ski lifts. The Grand Massif covers thousands of hectares of the French Alps
Thanks to Sunweb I’ve come to Flaine, a high-up hideaway with fine French food and bilingual locals. (The dream!) It’s small but perfectly formed with supermarkets, restaurants, bars, sportswear rentals, bowling; everything ski and apres-ski you could desire.
I’ve only been skiing once before so I start out with a refresher lesson on the nursery slopes. My unendingly encouraging teacher – Christophe from ESF Ski School – guides me through the basics. “This is how you snow plough, David…just watch me…now, always keep your weight forward, ..no, like this….It’s easy….tres bien…yes, that..allez!” After that, I’m on my own.
Skint’s David gets some one-to-one tuition from Christophe
There’s dozens of routes to explore for both the ski starter like me – and the specialist. I gradually gain confidence and by day three I’ve made the jump from the beginners’ green to the medium-difficulty blue run. You have to grab a lift or cable car each time to begin afresh, but the mind-blowing panoramic view on the way up makes the whole trip worthwhile.
Each skier can descend at their own pace. As my mantra is “slow and steady wins the race” – as to be expected – I’m constantly overtaken by dozens of fearless French whizzing past at every turn!
There’s loads of great pit stops for a snack on the slopes
There’s plenty of chances to snack on the slopes too. Restaurants and bars dot the route so you’re never too far from a hillside hamburger or baguette when you need the carbs.
And as for the off piste action, I’m delighted to report Flaine’s fondue is up there with the best of them – and not too expensively priced (c. €15). Beers are bountiful and bars are open until late so I spend my final hours nursing some red plonk and tucking in to cheese to soothe my aching body.
Magnifique. The perfect ending to my three days on the piste!
Drum roll, please!
