What do you get when you give 100 homeless people a disposable camera? A fascinating exhibition featuring hundreds of photos, that’s what.
For seven days Spitalfields Arts Market will be devoted to the results of this project (plus their paintings) in what’s now an annual initiative run by social enterprise, Cafe Art. The goal is to empower people affected by homelessness so they can earn some money by flogging the photos.
“We’re trying to empower people who are in a tough situation” says Cafe Art’s Paul Ryan. “Either sleeping rough, sofa surfing or only recently rehoused. We’ve seen positive changes in the individuals who participate in the project. It helps them gain confidence and cope with their situations.”
A selection of those photos have been chosen by the public to feature in the My London 2018 calendar available to buy in the market or online.
