It’s become a staple in the south London calendar – and this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Herne Hill Free Film Festival.
As you’d expect from the name, all films are FREE entry and take place at various venues around the SE24 postcode.
This year the festival kicks off with Empire of Light (dir by Sam Mendes)and closes with Hit the Road, an Iranian road comedy-drama. There’ll also be the chance to catch the Oscar nominated, Banshees of Inisherin, along with an outdoor screening of Nope, a sci-fi thriller at the Brockwell lido.
They haven’t smaller humans so expect some family favourites: ET at the Herne Hill velodrome and The Iron Giant at the Brockwell Park new barn.
If you’re a budding film maker yourself then you’ve no excuse not to get involved in the 48 Hour Film Challenge. Participants are given a line of dialogue, a prop, a Herne Hill location, and just 48 hours to create a three-minute short film. The top films will then be showcased at the festival.
The festival, a volunteer-led event, was established to bring film to all corners of the local community and make cinema accessible to everyone. This year the festival will again be supporting the local Norwood & Brixton Foodbank with donations collected at screenings so, if you can, take along some spare cash.
