Hard to imagine there was ever a time before The Big Issue – it’s become such an institution in London and across the country.
The figures speak for themselves. Since it launched 200 million copies have been sold by over 92,000 vendors, many of whom are homeless and the magazine provides a vital income.
To mark its 25 +1 anniversary, Big Issue founder John Bird, 71, (now Lord Bird) has put on a FREE exhibition of his paintings.
Lord Bird says that art has always been an important part of his life: “It was a saviour in my troubled youth. I take my art seriously; it’s what got me out of the shite.”
“I’d go to drawing classes rather than hanging around with the lads I grew up with who were knee-deep in wrongdoing. It inspired me and gave me a lot of confidence.”
“I encourage all people to paint. It quietens the soul.” And, on that note, he has a word of advice for the US President. ” Trump and Kim Jong-un should have a painting weekend!”
